Group Riding Tips For Motorcycle Riders
While riding your motorcycle on your own is perfectly enjoyable, there may come times when you want to ride with your friends or your local motorcycle club. Group riding is different from solo riding in a few key ways, so it’s important that everyone goes into the journey knowing what to expect and how to prepare. Here are our tips to make your group motorcycle rides easier and safer.
Create Your Plans Together
In order to make sure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to where you’re going and how you’ll get there, make sure you create the plans and determine the destination as a group. This means you can figure out the best route and the places you’ll want to stop for gas or food. If someone gets held back, they can make their way to the next stopping point and hopefully catch up to the rest of the group.
Prepare Your Bikes
Everyone in the group should take responsibility for making sure that their bikes are in good working order before they join the ride. Attend to regular maintenance needs and have your bikes serviced by a professional if necessary, like the mechanics here at Cowboy Powersports’ service department. Each rider should fill up their gas tank and get their riding gear in order, in addition to packing the supplies they may need on the ride, such as a water bottle, a phone charger, a rain poncho, and their wallet.
Since you’re going on a ride with several people, you can have only one rider carry a first-aid kit and a tool kit. This rider should be a more experienced motorcyclist who can stop to help anyone who needs assistance with their bike or medical attention for an injury.
Find a Formation That Works
Choosing a formation will help your riders stay in line and not hold up traffic. A staggered double line is one commonly used group formation because it allows for everyone to have plenty of space and visibility. The leader of the group (who should also be an experienced rider) will ride towards the left or right of a lane, with the next rider at the opposite side of the lane from them and a few seconds behind. Each rider will stagger themselves to the left or right and keep a few seconds of following distance in between.
