If you own an all-terrain vehicle, then you know how fun it can be to ride it straight through the mud, since that’s what these vehicles are designed to do: handle off-road conditions that a car or truck can’t. However, in order to prevent damage from occurring to your ATV, you’ll want to take some precautions first. Here are some of the ways you can prepare yourself and your ATV for a mudding trip.

Wear the Right Gear

You’re going to need to wear your powersports helmet with either goggles or a full face mask for eye protection. Mudding means that your ATV is liable to lose traction, which can cause you to hit something and be thrown from the vehicle. A helmet will save you from severe injury or even death.

You’ll also want riding boots and gloves to help maintain your grip. And make sure that you’re wearing some old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, since mud can be hard to get out!

Move the Airbox

The airbox in your ATV’s engine helps to draw in air so that the engine functions properly. If this gets wet, you can ruin your engine. Check the lid of your airbox for any holes and make sure it’s not loose or damaged. You can purchase a snorkel kit that helps to waterproof and secure your airbox by giving you longer CVT inlets and air intakes and outlet exhausts, which helps to keep your ATV’s interior components nice and dry.

Lubricate Your ATV

The parts of your ATV can get pretty dirty and this can do some real damage if you don’t take the time to lubricate them. Spraying WD-40 or another lubricant will help to prevent mud from sticking to the ATV. Some powersports enthusiasts use a marine-grade lubricant or grease that’s water-resistant to grease up their electrical connections and keep them dry.

Get a Winch & Tow Strap

You never know when you’re going to need to pull another rider out of the quagmire or be pulled out yourself. Make sure your ATV has both a winch on it (for helping someone else) and a tow strap (for helping yourself) so that you never get stuck anywhere. These tools are extremely valuable in general, but they’re especially good for mudding.
