Riding Your Motorcycle in the Rain
Here in the Beaumont area, we receive more rainfall than anywhere else in the state, particularly during the spring and summer months. All of the humidity pouring in off the Gulf Coast makes for many rainy days from Easter to Halloween, essentially, maxing out at over 65” per year!
If you’re a motorcyclist, this means you’ve got to become accustomed to and prepared to deal with rainy weather and wet roads. With a little bit of preparation, you can safely ride your motorcycle in the rain. Here are our tips from your Beaumont motorcycle dealership.
Gear Up Accordingly
Visibility and staying dry are your top two priorities when it comes to selecting raingear for motorcycle riding. You need to ensure that you’re able to see and be seen, so install some bright LED lights on your motorcycle and add reflective tape to your helmet and jacket, or wear a reflective vest over it.
A one-piece waterproof riding suit with reflective properties is the ideal attire for riding in the rain if you can get it. Match it with insulated riding gloves that give you a good grip and waterproof riding boots.
Check the Forecast
Before each ride, it pays to check the forecast to make sure that you’re not riding into a severe storm. This is particularly important as the summer ends and when hurricane season begins, but any rainy day can become a hailstorm or lightning storm. You should also avoid riding in both rain and high winds, as this will be too destabilizing.
Ride Defensively
Finally, as you ride your motorcycle in the rain, you’ll need to be aware of other motorists and be prepared to react to their movements. Cars and trucks can hydroplane on wet roads, so be ready to get out of their way, even if it means riding into the grass median or onto a shoulder. Give yourself as much space as you can and avoid swerving through traffic.
