Riding your motorcycle is easier and safer to do during the day, but there will be plenty of occasions where you need to ride at night. Unfortunately, there are more risks you may encounter at night and you’re in more danger as someone on an open-to-the-air vehicle on two wheels than a car driver is. Here are some strategies you can use to keep yourself safe.

Be Visible

The best thing you can be as a nocturnal motorcyclist is easy to see. Your black riding gear needs to be amped up with some reflective tape, or you need to add a blaze-orange safety vest at the very least. Light-colored reflective attire is typically best. Add reflective tape to your motorcycle, along with brighter LED lights along the sides. This will help everyone see exactly where you are and hopefully reduce their risk of running into you.

Ride Defensively

The problem with night riding, aside from the darkness, is that you can’t predict what other motorists will do. Drivers can be bad enough during the day, when they’re checking their phones or eating fast food while zooming around and not using their turn signals. At night, intoxication becomes a bigger factor as careless drivers leave bars and try to drive home.

Watch for cars that swerve or seem to speed up and slow down and give them a very wide berth. Be mindful of the cars around you and be ready to swerve into a median or shoulder to avoid a sudden lane change.
