Your UTV Cleaning Guide
Utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) are rugged and powerful off-roading vehicles that take you wherever you need to go for work or recreational riding purposes. But all those trips through dirt and mud and sand are going to get your UTV pretty dirty, and while it’s designed to handle muck, you shouldn’t just let all that grime build up and build up. Too much moisture can cause rust or corrosion, while the mud itself can hide urgent maintenance issues. Here’s how to clean up your UTV before you ride it or store it for the season.
Gather Your Tools
Park your UTV on a flat area with good drainage and remove all your personal items from it. Make sure that you have access to a fresh water supply, such as a pressure washer or simple garden hose. You’ll also want to get a bucket or two, a plastic mud scraper, degreaser, a car-wash soap or dish soap, some sponges, a scrub-brush, chamois cloths, wax or polish, and lubricant.
Rinse & Scrub
Use your hose or pressure washer to thoroughly hose down your UTV. If you have stubborn stuck-on mud, allow it to soak and then use your mud scraper to remove it. If there are greasy spots, spray on your degreaser and let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing.
Fill a bucket with warm water and add some of your soap, then use sponges to scrub the headlights, tires, sides, and cargo space. Wipe down seats and the controls with a soft cloth. Rinse as you go to prevent soap residue from sticking.
Dry & Polish
Allow your UTV to air-dry or use a leafblower or air compressor or your chamois cloths to speed up the process and reduce water spots. You can now apply a plastic polish or a tire shine to your UTV with a soft cloth, buffing it in and being careful to not get any polish on the seats. Now you can load up your belongings and get back to off-roading!
