Beginner Three-Wheeled Motorcycle Riding Tips
Three-wheeled motorcycles, also known as trikes, are a fun and more stable alternative to your standard bike. The three points of contact with the road make three-wheeled motorcycles safer to ride and easier to handle for many people, but if you’re not accustomed to riding them, there’s a bit of a learning curve. Here’s what to know as a beginning three-wheeled motorcycle rider.
Start Safely
Always put on your helmet before you hop on your three-wheeled motorcycle. Sit down and make sure the brakes are engaged as you start it up. Engage your clutch and shift into first gear, releasing your brakes before you release the clutch. Slowly increase your throttle to speed up as you ride.
Shift Gears With Care
When you shift gears on your three-wheeled motorcycle, it’ll feel like driving a manual-transmission car. Release the throttle, engage your clutch, shift to the gear you want, and release your clutch again. It’s best to shift gears while riding in a straight line.
Take a Wider Turning Radius
Compared to a standard bike, you’re going to have to make a much wider turn when you need to take a corner on your three-wheeled motorcycle. But the nice thing is that you don’t have to countersteer and use your body weight to make the turn; instead, it will feel more like turning while driving a standard car. Simply tilt the handlebars left or right as you decelerate, then keep your speed consistent as you turn at a wide angle. Increase your speed as you round out the turn.
